Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) Blood Test
Test Code: 004440
Specimen Type: Blood
Overview:
The Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) Plasma Test measures the levels of ACTH in your blood. ACTH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, a crucial stress hormone. The balance between ACTH and cortisol can be disrupted by various conditions affecting either the pituitary or adrenal glands.
Purpose:
This test is typically used to help diagnose or monitor conditions associated with abnormal cortisol levels. Conditions that might require this test include Cushing's syndrome, Addison's disease, hypopituitarism, and pituitary tumors that produce ACTH. It is often conducted alongside a cortisol blood test to provide more comprehensive insights.
Turnaround Time:
Results are usually available within 1 business day.
Note:
The turnaround times for test results are estimates and not guaranteed. Factors such as weather, holidays, additional testing for confirmation, or equipment maintenance may cause delays.
Test Preparation:
Timing: The blood sample for the ACTH test should ideally be collected between 7 AM and 10 AM, when ACTH levels are at their peak.
Biotin: If you are taking biotin supplements (also known as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R), it is recommended to stop taking them at least 72 hours before your test to avoid any impact on the results.
Medications: Some medications can interfere with the accuracy of this test. Discuss with your doctor whether you should temporarily adjust your medication before taking the test, especially if you are on hormone therapy or other long-term treatments.
